2. Creating a Dataset

On this page we explain how to create a dataset so you can start creating charts.

How to create a dataset

You will create a dataset to select what data you want to work with in the data visualization module. In the video below you'll see how to create a dataset using a simple SQL query to enable the data visualization module to work with every column in your database.

Creating a dataset step-by-step

Creating a dataset is very easy and can be done by users with no technical knowledge. When creating datasets, you don't need to worry about selecting a limited portion of your data, since you can define most conditions visually, when creating your charts.

Step 1 - Select your database

In the Library section of the data visualization module, click on the database which contains the data you wish to visualize.

Click on the database with the desired data.

Click on the database with the desired data.

Step 2 - Select or create a dataset

Click on "Browse datasets". If there's already a dataset created for this database, it will be shown here. If not, click on "Write SQL Query"

Click "Browse datasets". Choose or create a dataset.

Step 3 - Use a simple SELECT query

Type the following SQL query:

SELECT * FROM [dimension name]

You will be able to see the dimensions in this database on the left of the screen. Also, the system will autocomplete the correct name in the [DatabaseName.DimensionName] format.

This simple query works for any use case.

Step 4 - Run, name and save

Click the green RUN button at the top of the screen. You will be able to see the fields you're about to enable for visualization. You can also check a sample table with those fields by clicking "Data Table".

After ensuring you're seeing the correct fields, simply click the green "Done" button at the top-right.
You will be prompted to name your dataset. Choose a name you like and click "Rename". After that, click the green "Done" button again and done ! Your data is ready to be used to create charts.
